Press statement on Afghanistan agreement by Security Council President

The following statement on the Afghanistan agreement was issued today to the press by the President of the Security Council, Moctar Ouane (Mali):

The Security Council, in the presence of the Secretary-General, heard a briefing by Sir Kieran Prendergast on the agreement concluded today in Bonn on the interim Government in Afghanistan.

The members of the Security Council welcome the agreement reached in Bonn and congratulate Lakhdar Brahimi. They reiterate their complete confidence in him.

The members of the Security Council urge the parties to work together from now on in good faith to implement the agreement in full.

The Security Council declares its readiness to support the implementation of the agreement and its annexes.

The members of the Council reiterated their concern about the humanitarian situation and emphasized the need to pursue efforts in that regard.

The members of the Council thanked the German Government for the commendable efforts which contributed to the holding and the success of the Conference.
